Talk by Dr. Abhishek Yadav at Break fast Meeting: Insight into Liver Disease and its causes, at St. Catherine’s Hospital, Uganda, in association with VPS Lakeshore Hospital, Kochi. Dr. Abhishek talks about the functions of a liver.
The liver is quite an underrated organ of the body. Everyone talks about the heart and the kidneys, but we hear very less about the liver. The liver in fact the largest organ in the body. It weighs about one and half kilos which makes it the largest in the human body and unlike any other organs in the human body the liver is responsible for about 350 important vital functions those relate mainly to the excretion of the toxins from inside the body, producing energy for the day to day activities, producing all the enzymes that help in the digestion, making all the structural proteins for our body. So basically the liver is called the powerhouse of the body, because no other organ inside the body close to fulfilling so many functions as the liver does. The liver is also very susceptible to diseases.
Dr. Abhishek also talks about various diseases of the liver, like Hepatitis B, liver cancer, etc. Hepatitis B is a serious problem and the problem with hepatitis B is that once you contract it you have it for life. The liver cells are also more susceptible to develop cancer.
Various treatment options are also discussed. Liver transplantation is performed in patients with severe liver disease. In liver transplantation, the diseased liver is replaced with a healthy liver.Watch Video on Youtube
