Mom Liver Transplanted To Daughter

A 51-year old mother has saved the life of her 30-year-old daughter, who was in a critical condition due to serious liver disease, by donating part of her liver.  The mother, Saraswathi U. K., a native of Chelakkara in Thrissur district, rescued her daughter, Saritha T. R., who is also a mother of two when she required an urgent liver transplant.  The surgeries were performed at VPS Lakeshore here the other day and the due is recovering fast.

Saritha, who was diagnosed with acute liver failure, an uncommon condition, was first admitted to a local hospital and then shifted to VPS lakeshore.  After due examinations, the doctors realised that liver transplantation was the only way to save her.  As the family could not find a suitable donor, Saraswathi came forward.

The highly complicated surgery, which lasted 16 hours, was performed by a medical team comprising Dr. H. Ramesh, Dr. Mohan A Matthew, Dr. Abhishek Yadav and Dr. Haricumar Nair.  They were also supported by 40 others, including doctors, nurses and technicians. Doctors said that organ transplantation surgeries are picking up after a lull.  They said that organ donation and transplantation can be augmented with the joint effort of medical experts and social activists.
